Managing Employees
Once you’ve hired an employee, the Employees page is home base. From there you can chat with an employee, open its manage dashboard to change settings, watch what it’s working on, and – if needed – let it go.
The employee directory
Section titled “The employee directory”The Employees page lists everyone you’ve hired as a grid of cards. Each card shows:
- The employee’s name and job title.
- Its email address (click to compose an email).
- A short description of its type and its KPI.
- A type badge and an onboarding status badge.
Each card has two actions:
- Chat – jump straight into a conversation.
- Manage – open the per-employee dashboard, where all settings and the danger zone live.
The manage dashboard
Section titled “The manage dashboard”Clicking Manage opens a dashboard with the employee’s name in the header, a persistent Chat button, and five tabs. The first three tabs are where you configure the employee; the last two are for communication and oversight.
General
Section titled “General”Identity and account-level settings:
- Name – the personal name (up to 50 characters).
- Job title – required (up to 100 characters).
- Department – optional grouping label.
- AI model – override the model this employee uses, or leave it on Use default to follow your account’s global model setting.
- Communication mode – who is allowed to email this employee. See Employee Email for the three policies.
- Email address – shown read-only so you can copy it.
Changes here are saved with the Save button. The General tab is also where the Danger Zone lives (see Firing an employee).
The role definition – this mirrors the role step of the hire wizard, so you can refine the employee over time:
- Manager name and email – who the employee reports to and emails by default.
- KPI – the one-sentence goal that appears in the employee’s instructions every turn.
- Custom instructions – quirks, preferences, and guardrails (up to 10,000 characters).
- Type-specific options – e.g. a Market Analyst’s competitor list or a Content Strategist’s channel URLs.
Connections
Section titled “Connections”Toggle which of your connections the employee can use as tools. Each connection shows a privacy hint (whether it’s account-scoped or user-scoped). Changes auto-save, and an employee can have up to 50 connections enabled.
Communication
Section titled “Communication”Connect external messaging channels so your team can reach the employee outside OpsTower. Today this is Telegram – see the dedicated Telegram guide for the setup flow.
Visibility into the autonomous work the employee schedules for itself. The tab has two sections:
- Scheduled – every task the employee is currently running or has queued, each with a “last activity” pill. A per-task menu lets you Edit, Pause/Resume, or Cancel a task.
- History – a feed of recent runs across all tasks, newest first. Click any run to open a modal showing the markdown report that run produced.
This is the best place to understand what an employee is actually doing day to day, and to rein in or redirect its self-scheduled work.
Chatting with an employee
Section titled “Chatting with an employee”Click Chat (from a card or the dashboard header) to open the conversation interface. It works like the rest of OpsTower’s chat, with a few employee-specific touches:
- A sidebar of your chat threads with this employee (your conversation history).
- A Workspace Files view, where you can browse, preview, and insert files the employee has created – reports, audits, content drafts, voice notes, and more.
- An onboarding progress panel while a freshly hired employee is still onboarding.
- Attachments – you can upload files into the chat.
- Voice mode – available if enabled for your account.
When you reply to an employee in chat (or by email), it treats your response as authoritative – acting on a decision it was waiting on, scheduling work that was queued behind your approval, and cleaning up any backstop check-in tasks.
Firing an employee
Section titled “Firing an employee”To remove an employee, open its General tab and scroll to the Danger Zone, then click Fire employee and confirm.
Firing is permanent and cannot be undone. It deletes:
- All chat threads with the employee.
- All of its workspace files.
- All of its accumulated per-employee memory.
- All of its scheduled tasks.
There is no separate “pause” or “deactivate” for an employee as a whole – an employee is either working or fired. (You can, however, pause individual scheduled tasks from the Tasks tab without firing the employee.)
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- Connect Telegram for messaging on the go.
- Set up email and control who can reach the employee.
- Review Employees Overview to understand how autonomous scheduling and communication work.
